Heyyy, what's happenin'? You've reached the voicemail of one very fine-lookin' man. Wanna chat? Fanboy all over my mad skillz? Declare your undying love for me? You know what to do. [BEEEEP]
[...Of all the news he was expecting to hear, that definitely wasn't even in his Top 5. Whatever he had intended to say dies in his throat as he stares at her in shock. Eventually he passes a hand over the top of his mask, shifts in place.]
...Shit. You mean all this time he was-- fuck.
[There's a long silence as he digests this information.]
She's... she's got no one else, y'know? He's been taking care of her all this time.
[His meaning should be painfully apparent, even if he doesn't outright ask the question: What happens to Jessica now?]
I know. [She swallows, arms crossing over her chest.] That's actually...what I wanted to talk to you about.
Stefan said since her brother's gone, she wants to come live with us. Here, I mean. She's not planning to leave this time. [Korra sighs, rubbing at her cheek tiredly.] It's not safe for her here, but I don't think he can convince her to change her mind.
[He can't finish. Somehow, he'd always known something like this was on the horizon, ever since that conversation with Stefan. The idea is ludicrous, of course-- she'll be in constant danger here, as Korra's noted, and although he has no doubt that she'll have loads of protection from the people who care about her, they can't keep a close eye on her all the time.
And yet. And yet. He can't deny the sudden thrill in his chest at the prospect of her living here, living with him; being able to see her every day from now on. The notion fills him with guilt, but at the same time he's always wanted this, hasn't he?]
I mean, is that really an option? I mean, we've got Yao traitors crawlin' out of our ears over here. Does she really know what she's getting herself into?
[The argument's weak. He's conflicted, and he feels guilty for entertaining the idea at all.]
[He still doesn't like it. There's too many ways this could go wrong, and he doesn't know if he has the strength to withstand another of her deaths. He barely survived with his mind intact last time.
But at the same time he knows that Korra is right. She really has no one else who can take care of her and he isn't so sure Stefan would be the best guardian. Better that she be surrounded by people who actually care about her well-being. Wade lets out a cynical laugh.]
Guess I don't really have a say in the matter anyway, do I?
[It's clear by the tone in his voice that he's struggling to sound disapproving and failing miserably. Not because he believes Korra deserved to get smacked, but because his little girl is quite the spitfire. It's hard to get mad at her for showing such a brazen attitude.]
I guess I'll just have to go along with it, then. Don't want her to beat me up too, after all.
Heh. Yeah, that's my girl. She's a little spitfire, that one.
[Wade's shoulders rise and fall in a heavy sigh.]
So I guess I should stop worryin' so much about what's gonna happen to her over here, huh? Seems like she's comin' over whether I like it or not. I mean-- not that I'm not happy to have her here, but...
[He trails off. The memory of what had happened to her the last time she'd visited them is still all too fresh in his mind. In almost every instance, all the pain and torture she had gone through had been because of them. He doesn't know if he can survive any more of her being punished for fraternizing with them.]
Yeah...I don't think we can stop her from staying here.
[She can see him going distant, like he's got something else on his mind. Given who they're talking about, though, Korra can make a guess. He's worried about Jessica, and she can't blame him after hearing about the way she died.
If something happens to her now, there's no guarantee that they can bring her back with some magic ritual again.]
All we can do is keep an eye on her, make sure she's safe.

If it’s true, if she really doesn’t have anyone left, that’s probably a big part of it. She’s close to you and some other people around here, right?

[Korra smiles, fondly. She doesn't seem bothered that she was surprised by a little girl at all.]
Once she's decided something, it's probably hard to talk her out of it.

[Korra just grins, because Wade seems to get it after that.]
You probably should just listen. Who knows what other tricks she’s hiding, just waiting to use on people who don’t listen to her.

S-Sorry, sorry-- I just... I can't believe she hit you in the face! Got real brass, that one.
Don't worry. I'll do my best not to piss her off. I mean, savin' her twice has gotta account for something, right?
no subject
Yeah, no kidding. I wasn't expecting it either. I can see why you like her so much, though. She didn't want anyone to be left behind.
